We first visited Stresa, at the southwestern end of Lago Maggiore, in early September of 2001. We spent four nights at the Hotel Verbania on the Isola dei Pescatori ("island of the fishermen"). It was a splendid hotel, a great location (water taxis everywhere) and I couldn't imagine a better place to stay.
In early May of 2005 Susan and I returned to Stresa on a day trip visit from the Villa Crespi, where we were staying in Orta San Julio, a small village on Lago Orta, a tiny lake just west of Stresa and on the other side of the grantire bulk of Mottarone, one of ther numerous mountains that dominate the scenery there.
