Getting to Siena

Public transportation throughout Tuscany and in Italy generally is inexpensive, easy to use and in a word, superb. For a handy collection of transportation links in and around Siena, click here. Just scroll down to the "Comme arrivare/How to get there" link box.

Train: The train takes about an hour and a half from Florence to Siena and runs frequently every day. If you're coming from Pisa you may have to change trains at Empoli or Firenze for Siena. The train from Roma is a bit more awkward and not as frequent: you have to change trains in Chiusi for Siena, and the train station is about 1.5 kms outside the walls in Siena. The Italian Railway is easily accessed online.

Bus: One of our correspondents has written that she has "traveled to Siena from Firenze many times and MUCH prefer to take a SITA bus. The bus station is just around the corner from the train station in Florence, the buses take just under an hour, run frequently, and let you off in the city center." Check their schedule online.

Do you need information about the bus service from Rome to Siena or from Siena to just about anywhere else in Italy? If so check out the Sena (not Siena) bus company's website. You can find out about local Siena bus services online as well.

Car: Getting to Siena by car is really no problem: two hours from Rome or forty-five minutes from Florence. (A good road atlas is a must. Check out my comments on the Recommended Readings page.) It's what to do with your car once you've gotten there that presents the greatest challenge.

Remember that auto traffic is strictly limited inside the city walls so unless you have special authorization from your hotel be prepared to park outside. In fact,

Alert: parking near the city walls has become quite impossible -- most of the free lots such as near the fortezza are taken up by locals early in the day throughout the day and the only parking available, at least in our experience, has been metered which can be expensive if you are thinking about day-long, etc. and speaking of expensive it is reported that parking in Siena is now among some of the most expensive in Europe: €1.50 an hour or €47 a day!

There is a free parkling lot next to the fortezza and a pay lot on the other side of the fortezza next to the La Lizza park; there is also a pay lot nearby at the nearby soccer stadium. Note however that these pay lots are unavailable on market Wednesdays and soccer Sundays. Parking along the street next to the fortezza is free, although if you park down some of the sidestreets it is metered. Check first/

There are also pay parking garages/lots at Porta Tufi (signposted "Il Campo Parking"). It is a 15-20 minute walk to the Piazza del Campo. And another pay lot at Porta San Marco, as well as metered parking on the street leading into Porta Romana. There are parking garages by Porta Ovile (metered), depending upon where you're going inside the walls. Either way check with your hotel or landlord to see what your parking options may be.
