We have stayed at the Hotel Duomo in Siena twice and the Hotel Arcobaleno once, and the Hotel Astoria in Florence once. For my updated reviews from March of 2007 just click here!
For self-catering rentals we strongly recommend Le Meridiane (3 Via Fracassi, 53100 Siena), which is located outside the walls of the historic center of the city but just a quick bus ride into town (about 15 minuters, the stop is only 200 meters from the complex) or about a 40 minute walk (OK a brisk walk).
We first rented an apartment there for two weeks in 1999, and enjoyed it so much we returned in February of 2005 for an 8-week stay! More. . .
Another recommendation for an apartment outside the walls of the city came from Kris and Floyd who live in Costa Rica. (Kris was in language school with us in Siena in 2005.) They rented a wonderful place near the historic center of Siena, Podere Il Pero.
Another place you might want to consider, particularly if you want to stay in a more rural environment, is the Azienda Agraria Montestigliano, located in Sovicille, southwest of Siena. A friend of ours reports that the rooms are quite pretty and the views wonderful. And indeed they are. We dropped by to see for ourselves in March of 2007 and can report that this is one fantastic place to stay. They also have an interesting program for teaching kids to cook.
You can learn more at their website, http://www.montestigliano.it/ or drop them an email at: info@montestigliano.it.
